Second Canadian farm quarantined
Canadian inspectors have placed a second chicken farm in Saskatchewan under quarantine because of an avian flu outbreak nearby.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency acted Friday at the small farm located less than two miles from Pedigree Poultry, a large commercial farm north of Regina quarantined earlier, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Saturday. The agency said the 20 chickens tested at the "small backyard operation" showed no signs of disease.
More than 50,000 chickens at Pedigree Poultry were to be killed and all equipment sanitized, the network reported.
The H7N3 strain of influenza is fatal to birds but doesn't pose a danger to people, said Lisa Bishop Spencer of Chicken Farmers of Canada. She expressed confidence the outbreak can be contained to the one large commercial farm with little economic damage.
