Romania’s Government finances social projects in Moldova
The Agency for International Assistance of the Government of Romania will finance a project worth US$120,000 intended for Moldova. The project envisions the development of an information system for managing statistical data about family violence. It will be implemented by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in 2008.
Boris Galca, the head of the UNFPA Office in Moldova, has told a news conference on July 1 that the project’s aim is to work out an integrated information system for managing the information about family violence in two districts - Drochia and Cahul – on the basis of Romania’s experience. Galca said that family violence in Moldova continues to be a serious problem that affects the women aged between 16 and 35 years in each fourth family.
Valentina Bodrug-Lungu, the president of Gender-Centru NGO, said that most often, violence in the family is regarded as violence against women, but the men in Moldova are also subjected to violence and this fact should be shown in statistics.
Galca also said that Romania will soon finalize another project worth 40,000 euros aimed at remedying the problems faced by the Roma community in Moldova. The project received preliminary approval and will be implemented also through UNFPA. 
Attending the conference, the Romanian Ambassador in Chisinau Filip Teodorescu said that according to its European policies, between 2007 and 2009 Romania will earmark special funds for assistance and demographic development, intended mainly for Moldova, Serbia and Georgia.
“This project is one of the components of this financial assistance from which Moldova benefits. It will receive 60% of the assistance or US$2.9 million. A sum of US$2.1 million has been already allocated for humanitarian assistance projects, while US$800,000 will be allocated through UNFPA for social development projects,” the Ambassador said.//// Reporter.MD
