Romanians protesting in Bucharest

Bucharest/ Moldova.ORG/ -- Over 2000 people from Bucharest rallied today against their government, demanding the resignation of the Romanian president Traian Basescu. The protesters gathered in support for Raed Arafat, the founder of SMURD (Romanian Emergency Rescue Service) who resigned from his function of sub-secretary of State and from the Ministry of Public Health Care, informs Adevarul.ro.

Similar protests took place in several cities of Romania, such as Iasi, Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara, Sibiu, Targu Mures and Deva.

According to the Romanian press, tens of civilians and police officers were injured as a result of the violent actions. The protesters crowded the University Square of Bucharest. They shouted “Basescu resign!” “We are for SMURD, SMURD is for us!” “Fatal error 404: Democracy not found” and others.

The protesters organized themselves on Facebook. The crowd blocked the traffic within the central part of Romania’s capital. The events began at 2:00 PM (local time). The protests will continue tomorrow.
