Romanian Official Resigns After Sex Video Released
Kompromat is alive and well. After last week's revelations about a British diplomat cavorting with prostitutes in Russia, a new sex-tape scandal looks set to further damage relations between Romania and Moldova.
Romania's top official in Moldova has resigned after the release of a video that purportedly shows him having sex with an unidentified woman.
Ion Nuica, the Romanian consul in Chisinau, resigned today after the Romanian daily "Curentul" published a 15-minute video and several photos allegedly showing him and a woman in various sexual positions.
The woman is said to be a Moldovan employee at the Romanian Embassy in Chisinau.
Nuica, who is reportedly married to a diplomat and has one child, was in charge of the Romanian Embassy since Ambassador Filip Teodorescu was expelled from Moldova amid allegations of political interference in the aftermath of the April 5 parliamentary elections.
The Bucharest-based Mediafax news agency says Nuica's resignation was confirmed by the Romanian Foreign Ministry, which refused to say if Nuica is the man in the video but stated that he was recalled to Bucharest last week on other issues.
Ties between Moldova and Romania have been especially strained since the controversial elections.
Moldova's pro-Russian Communist government has accused Bucharest of harboring revisionist ambitions and of fomenting antigovernment sentiment that led to the postelection street violence in Chisinau.
