Population decline in Moldova
As of January 1, 2010, the number of the Moldovan population, calculated on the basis of the birth-rate and mortality data without taking into consideration Transnistria, constituted 3.564 million people - 3 thousand less than a year ago.
According to the National Bureau for Statistics, about 60% of the population lives in the rural area - 2.09 million. The most densely populated raions are Orhei - 125.8 thousand people (+0.1 thousand), Cahul - 124.4 thousand (+0.5 thousand), Hincesti - 122.9 thousand (-0.4 thousand). The most inconsiderable population number lives in Basarabeasca - 29.4 thousand (-0.1 thousand)
Chisinau's population accounts for 786.3 thousand (+0.9 thousand) people, Balti - 148.2 thousand (+0.2 thousand), the Gagauz autonomy - 160.1 thousand.
According to the census of 2004 Moldova's population constituted 3.389 million people. Successful to the USSR census of 1989, the population of the Moldovan SSR constituted 4.3 million people, including 700 thousand in Transnistria.
