Moldovans are against a dissolution of parliament and favour constitutional amendments instead, according to an opinion poll made public on 8 December by the Institute of Public Policies.

As many as 32.6 per cent of the respondents support the idea of amending the constitution not to dissolve parliament. Under the constitution, the current parliament has to be disbanded as it has failed to elect head of state twice.

Some 29.4 per cent of the respondents said the constitution should be observed but noted that a dissolution of parliament was undesirable.

At the same time, 17 per cent of the respondents said it was necessary to dissolve parliament. As many as 31.4 per cent of the respondents said that the opposition Communist Party was to blame for an eventual early parliamentary election the Communists boycotted the two attempts to elect president in parliament, whereas 22.9 per cent said that the four parties of the ruling alliance were responsible for this.

If a referendum were held next Sunday to decide on the mechanism of electing president, 69.6 per cent of the respondents would vote for a nationwide presidential election and only 14.6 per cent believe that the president should be elected by parliament.
