The police post that was placed at the entrance to the Chisinau City Hall will be replaced by a reception post. Such a decision was made after the City Hall remained without guard as the policemen that guarded the entrance left the post on May 29.

A waiting lounge will be set up for the persons that scheduled meetings with officials of the City Hall. The announcement was made by the Mayor General Dorin Chirtoaca at Monday’s meeting of the City Hall.

At the meeting, the deputy police commissioner of Chisinau Iacob Gumenita said that the withdrawn policemen have been involved in patrolling activities because there are not enough police officers. The number of mass rallies has increased significantly and the police officers also need to maintain public order in green areas, Gumenita said.

He also said that the police did not work at the City Hall under contract, but on the basis of an oral ordinance of 1999. He stressed that the withdrawn police officers could return to the post at the City Hall if the personnel-related situation improves. Moreover, Gumenita considers that the City Hall could seek help from such specialized services as the State Guard Service.

Dorin Chirtoaca described the police’s act as defiance. “For several times, the police encouraged and even allowed groups of persons to enter the City Hall without authorization and it is not excluded that the withdrawal of the police post is an attempt to avoid responsibility in case new groups wanted to block the activity of the City Hall,” Dorin Chirtoaca said // Reporter.MD
