Elena Vnorovscaia / Chişinău / Moldova.ORG / -- A jury today decided resident of the U.S. city of Pittsburgh, a 24-year-old Richard Poplawski, should be executed for killing three local police officers in April 2009.

Mr. Poplawski, 24, was convicted Saturday of killing Officers Eric Kelly, Paul Sciullo Jr. and Stephen Mayhle as they responded to a domestic dispute at his Stanton Heights home.

Richard Poplawski should die by lethal injection for murdering three Pittsburgh police officers, a jury ruled on Tuesday, capping an eight-day trial and a two-year ordeal for the officers' families and the police department.

The crime occurred April 4, 2009. In short, the young man was arguing with his mother. She called the police. The shooting started. Police officers were killed…

The verdict was announced on June 28 and before the jury found the accused killer is fully proven.

The decision came after two days of the penalty phase of the trial, which featured testimony from the victims' families as well as testimony about Mr. Poplawski's difficult family life.

Defense testimony in the penalty phase concluded around noon and Richard Poplawski began to offer an apology.

Richard Poplawski was raised in an environment dominated by guns, violence and alcohol - run by a grandfather who shot at people and animals, and a mother who repeatedly attempted suicide - extended family members told the jury at the convicted police killer's sentencing hearing.
