Plane crashed in New York, all passenger survived
An Airbus 320 aircraft of the US Airways has gone down in the Hudson River near 48th Street in midtown Manhattan, New York, on Thursday Jan. 15, 2009. All passengers survived and are off the plane and rescued.
Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Laura Brown said Flight 1549 had just taken off from LaGuardia Airport en route to Charlotte, N.C., at 3:26 p.m. and went down minutes later.
Local media reported that the plane was an Airbus 320 with 146 passengers and five crew which had just taken off from La Guardia Airport and was trying to return after apparently striking a flock of geese, disabling both its engines.
Before being rescued, passengers were standing on the wings of a U.S. Airways plane while the water in the Hudson River was quite chilly. Dozens of people wearing yellow life vests were seen on the wings of the downed plane as it floated in the cold river, and they were plucked to safety by ferry boats, inflatable rafts that surrounded the jet.
Media called the pilot hero.
