Pentagon shooting: Man trying to enter US military complex
The Pentagon police chief says security officers have shot a man who tried to enter the U.S. military complex outside Washington, after the man drew a handgun and opened fire.
Police chief Richard Keevill says two officers who returned fire were shot by the gunman. He says the officers' injuries are not considered life-threatening, and that the injuries to the gunman are much more severe.
The suspect is now in custody [his name is John Patrick Bedell].
The shooting prompted officials to impose a security lockdown at the Pentagon.
The incident took place after the suspect left a subway station adjacent to the Pentagon. Keevill says the suspect appeared calm as he walked toward the military complex, noting that he drew a handgun after being asked by security officers to show an identification badge.
The motive for the shooting is not clear.
