Violence in various parts of Pakistan on the eve of the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan has killed dozens, The Washington Post reported Friday.

In the most daring of the incidents directed against the military, a suspected suicide bombing killed 15 soldiers at dinner time in a well-secured mess hall of an elite army commando unit in the northwest part of the country. The Post said it wasn’t clear how the bomber managed to enter the base of the Special Services Group.

In another incident, the Post quoted military officials as saying a battle erupted after extremists attacked an army base in tribal South Waziristan. At least 50 extremists and two soldiers died in the clashes, they said.

In another incident in the same area, official told the Post a Taliban rocket destroyed a school building where about 90 paramilitary troops had been stationed. The report said it wasn't known how many of the troops were in the building at the time.

It was in the same tribal area from where about 270 Pakistani troops were taken hostage last month by Taliban fighters. The soldiers haven't yet been freed. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
