Organic dairy goods may protect children

Organic dairy products such as yogurt, milk and cheese may help protect children from ailments such as asthma, a Dutch study has found.

By studying the diets of 2,500 pregnant women and their children, researchers at the Netherlands' Louis Bolk Institute found that women who ate organic dairy products typically had children who were less likely to suffer from allergies, The Daily Mail said Saturday.

Researcher Dr. Machteld Huber said his study also found that these children typically did not suffer from eczema as much as the other children.

"There was a clear relationship between organic dairy use and less eczema," Huber said.

"The difference was significant, but only for children exclusively eating organic dairy products," he added. "We didn't find a relationship if they had organic and conventional dairy products."

The study also focused on other organic foods such as meats and fruits, but those products did not show a clear relationship to allergies, the British newspaper said.  // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
