No gay pride parade to be organized in Moldova this year

No gay pride parade will take place this year in Moldova, despite the organization of the “Rainbow across Nistru” Festival which is due to take place in Chisinau on May 10-12.

According to Angela Frolov, the head of GenderDoc-M Centre of Moldova, “the LGBT community will not organize a gay pride parade this year because it does not have any sense. When you organize a parade that means you’re opposing a certain idea.”

“The anti-discrimination bill has already been redrafted and sent to the Government for approval and it includes the phrase ‘sexual orientation’, fact which we agree with and do not appeal,” Angela Frolov told Moldova.ORG.

She added that the event of this year will last three days and will include activities for everyone. One of the projects is the opening of the commemorative stone ‘Victims of homophobia’. The LGBT community of Moldova will also screen movies about sexual minorities.

The LGBT community of Moldova tried for several years to organize a gay pride parade in Chisinau but they failed because of the strong opposition from the civil society and intervention of the police officers.
