No charges due in mouth-taping incident

A magistrate in Cobb County, Ga., has decided that no charges will be filed against a former after-school program employee who taped a child's mouth shut.

The director of public safety for Cobb County schools, James Arrowood, said this week that an investigation into the taping incident found that no criminal charges were necessary, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Thursday.

"There was inappropriate conduct and improper action," he said. "It was definitely inappropriate what happened. When we presented this matter to the magistrate, they determined warrants would not be issued."

Local resident Tonya Jones had complained that a staff member at the local after-school program had taped her 10-year-old son's mouth shut last week for talking too much.

While the program assistant no longer works for the school district, Jones has complained that school officials should offer better training to those dealing with children.

"Even if they are not teachers, they should have training in how to handle children," she told the newspaper.  // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
