Moldova's BASA-Press agency has ceased its activity, having notified its subscribers beforehand that in 2010 it would not extend contracts on information supply.

Agency's ex-director Sergiu Ipati told your Infotag correspondent the agency had been closed down because of the ongoing financial and economic crisis, due to which the number of subscribers had critically dropped.

"Throughout 2009, we kept on losing subscribers, and by the end of the year BASA became unprofitable", Ipati said. However, he seems to be cherishing some hope yet, for, in his words, the agency has only suspended its activities "for an uncertain period".

One of the BASA founders, Vasile Botnaru, voiced regret over the work stoppage. He believes tht the local information market will be missing BASA-Press. He said, "Our mass media market has not yet formed completely, so the closure of any agency tells adversely on the development of information services".

BASA-Press began working on November 5, 1992, and was the first independent private news agency in the independent Republic of Moldova. Infotag was the second one, operating officially since December 1, 1993. A year ago, the Moldovan information market lost another news agency - Flux, which was controlled by the Christian Democratic Popular Party headed invariably by Iurie Rosca.
