The just appointed Minister of the Interior MG Victor Catan has stated the Moldovan police shall be strictly observing citizens' human rights and freedoms. He was invited to parliament today to report on the current crime situation in the republic.

Reviewing pensioners' actions of protest that took place earlier this week, the minister said the police warned some organizers of the actions, including Alexander Lomakin of the National Bolshevist Party, about their civil duty to observe public order.

"We shall not permit any aggression or human right violation. However, the police shall not use force against protesters", Catan said.

He voiced concern about a fairly high level of crime in Chisinau though nearly a half of the republic's officers in charge of public order maintenance are concentrated in the capital city.

General Catan outlined the priorities the new MoI command has set for themselves, such as public order maintenance, crime prevention, curbing of criminal groups' activities, combating of trafficking in human beings and drugs, illegal migration prevention, etc. He particularly stressed the need to restore the citizens' trust in the law enforcement.
