Prime Minister Vlad Filat today participated in a string of events to commemorate the victims of deportations and political repression, the government s press service has said.

Filat attended the opening of the exhibition Incarcerated Destinies dedicated to the victims of the Stalin-era repression at the National Museum of History and Archaeology.

Filat said that the 61st anniversary of the second wave of deportations that took place on 6 July 1949 is marked today, recalling that 40,850 of the best Moldovan householders had been taken to Siberia.

"Today, we should take efforts so that every citizen gets to know the then horror so that it repeats never again," Filat said.

The prime minister highly appreciated the efforts of the exhibition s organizers who managed to prepare it in a record-short time.

The chairwoman of the association of deportees and political detainees, Valentina Sturza, thanked the government for actions taken to back the association s members and to commemorate the victims of deportations.

Filat also attended the opening of the Museum of victims of deportations and political repression within the National Museum of History and Archaeology. The decision to set up the museum was taken by the cabinet last week.

"It is our duty to pay homage to those who suffered because of the deportations," Filat said, giving assurances that the future museum, the building of which is in a poor state, will be inaugurated soon.

Filat also attended a religious service to commemorate the victims of the Stalin-era repression carried out by a group of priests headed by Metropolitan Bishop of Chisinau and All Moldova Vladimir.

On the same day, Filat laid flowers and participated in a commemorative meeting held at the foundation stone of a monument to the victims of deportations due to be erected in the square of the Chisinau-based train terminal.

Filat noted that it was for the first time ever that Moldova officially organized events to commemorate the victims of deportations and political repression.

"We must know the historical truth and act as fully free people. We should prove that there are people in Moldova able to continue its destiny. I believe in the future of the Republic of Moldova," Filat said.
