Moldovan premier announces payment of social compensations

Prime Minister Vlad Filat today held a briefing to announce the beginning of the payment of social compensations for November-December 2010, the government's communications and press relations department has said.

Filat said that initially, 93 million lei had been earmarked under the 2010 budget law and another 112.8 million lei in line with the recent amendments to the law. As much as 137 million lei is to be allotted for social compensations for November-December 2010.

"Retirees whose monthly income is less than 900 lei can benefit from compensations. There are 521,472 retirees and 33,061 socially vulnerable families," the premier said.

Filat specified that social compensations for these two months will be paid in the form of a single payment. Thus, each beneficiary can receive 260 lei starting from today. The right to take the compensations is valid during three years.

"As you already know, pursuant to the protocol on the delivery of natural gas to Moldova, signed by the communist government and the Russian gas giant Gazprom, the gas price increases periodically. This year, the gas price increased twice, which triggered rises of prices of other goods and services. In order to help low-income people cope with the difference in prices, we allotted social compensations to 260,000 people. They received 390 lei each for three months. This time, we have extended the number of beneficiaries to 521,472 and 33,061 families," Vlad Filat said.

The premier said that a simple payment format has been worked out for the beneficiaries' convenience. They can receive the money at any branch of the Banca de Economii bank on the basis of their ID cards.

"Moreover, the bank's employees will go to settlements where there are no branches of the bank, in order to inform people about this. Thus, people can receive the money in their settlements," the premier said.

Filat said that the government would further allot social compensations in 2011. The money is seen in the draft 2011 state budget law. On 1 April, pensions will be subjected to indexation again.

The premier specified that social payments are just one aspect of the social policies promoted by the government and that it would further undertake actions to secure people's decent living standards.

"I know that there are various acts of speculation when it comes to social compensations. It is rumoured that we are trying to misinform people and that this important process might be sabotaged. Given these facts, I would like to thank you for helping inform people about their rights correctly," Filat said.
