Brothers Adrian and Roman Mocanu today left the Romanian embassy in Chisinau, which they illegally entered on 25 September 2008.

In a statement for the media, politician Sergiu Mocanu, Adrian and Roman's father, has said that his sons could leave the embassy after the Court of Appeal had replaced their preliminary arrest with a 10-day house arrest.

Mocanu believes that his children were forced to hide in the Romanian embassy "from police arbitrariness".

"My family united one year on. This became possible only after the regime of [ex-President] Vladimir Voronin fell. (Mocanu was an adviser to President Voronin in the mid-2000s - Infotag.) On his orders, my family and I were persecuted," Mocanu said.

He thanked the Romanian authorities "for reacting calmly to the acts of provocation by the anti-Romanian regime and for supporting their citizens with dignity".

Adrian and Roman Mocanu could hide in the Romanian embassy in Chisinau because they hold Romanian citizenship. In the summer of 2008, Moldovan law-enforcement bodies opened a criminal case against the two brothers, accused of severely beating a young man in a disco club.
