Moldovan ministry denies holding TB-infected in prison in Bender

Protests staged by residents of the town of Bender in the breakaway Dniester region outside the Moldova-run prison, where TB-infected inmates are reportedly kept, are "attempts by the Dniester separatist authorities to block the prison's operation", the Moldovan Infotag news agency reported on 2 June, quoting the Moldovan Justice Ministry.

In a statement quoted by Infotag, the ministry said that "there is not a single TB-infected person in the Bender penitentiary". "Since 2003, prisoners with tuberculosis have been receiving treatment in a special department of the prison in Pruncul and in the town of Rezina," the ministry said.

The ministry called on all parties involved in the Dniester settlement process and experts at international structures to help ease tension around the Bender prison, Infotag said.

On 28 May Bender residents blocked access to the prison, saying it poses threat to their health. They demanded the prison's removal from the town.
