Moldovan LGBT community members rally in front of Ukrainian Embassy

Man protesting in front of the Ukrainian Embassy in Chisinau

Members of GenderDoc-M from Chisinau rallied in front of the Ukrainian Embassy in Chisinau today against the homophobic legislation of Ukraine. The members of the LGBT community of Moldova demonstrated against the draft law which is about to prohibit the so-called “homosexual propaganda” in Ukraine. The demonstrators say this bill will endanger the freedom of speech in this East European country.

“It is a dangerous project and we try to support our friends by protesting in order to stop Ukraine from doing this unjustifiable step. These are shameful projects for a country which strives toward Europe. If these laws will be enacted, the situation will become likewise as in Russia, where the demonstrators are rallying and are being arrested and fined,” Angela Frolova, the Lobby and Advocacy Program Coordinator of GENDERDOC-M.

On July 3-6, 2012, the Ukrainian Parliament will debate the draft law “regarding the amendments on some legislative acts concerning children rights in a protected informational area.”

Unofficially, the law is unknown under Bill No. 8711 regarding the prohibition of the homosexual propaganda.
