Moldovan Government rejects NIT TV outlet’s accusations
The Government of Moldova expressed surprise over the NIT television channel’s reaction to the decision taken last week by the Department for Governmental Buildings Administering to not extend for year 2010 the contract on renting the 5-storey building, which the Russian-language and largely pro-Communist channel has been using for 12 years.
The governmental press service stated today that the term of rent of 2.7 thousand square meters of premise area expires on this December 31, and shall not be prolonged because the premises are needed for accommodating public governance structures.
The press service stressed, the NIT’s assertions that after December 31 the company will allegedly be thrown out into the street are absolutely ungrounded because NIT has privatized in that very building over 1.7 thousand square meters of work area for a price of 3,637 lei/square meter. Seeing that the rent treaty was not extended, the company should have solved the problem of premises beforehand, the Government presumes.
Furthermore, the Government expressed regret that “ordinary contract relations have unfoundedly received a political coloring… The Government does not infringe on the NIT’s right to run its work activities, and will provide it with a reasonable timing to solve the problem. The Government is reaffirming its adherence to democratic values, including to the freedom of the press, and its commitment to ensuring all mass media with equal work conditions”.
Last Thursday, the Moldovan Government unexpectedly decided that the NIT television channel must vacate its premises by 1800 on December 31 at the latest.
Company’s Director General Sergei Ryazantsev stated to Infotag upon learning the astonishing news on the Christmas eve that the NIT had invested very heavily in the building’s repair and maintenance and in technical equipment. He is regarding the insidious refusal to extend the rent as “a ban on broadcasting… We are convinced that this repressive decision of the Government’s has been a reaction to the channel’s civil stance. After a change of power in Moldova, NIT refused to obey to the new political leadership”.
The NIT administration and staff have formulated their attitude to the Government’s decision in a statement for the press, saying that they shall continue struggling for their professional and civil rights.
