Moldova To Temporarily Ban International Adoptions
Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin said he plans to temporarily ban the adoption of Moldovan children by foreign couples, RFE/RL's Moldovan Service has reported.
Voronin announced his decision to the Moldovan cabinet on January 28.
On January 13, Chisinau police arrested Moldovan adoption official Svetlana Chifa and accused her of being involved in an illegal child adoption in 2006.
Moldova is one of the poorest countries in Eastern Europe and an attractive destination for Western couples seeking to adopt children.
