Moldova: New deadline for issuing IDs to rebel region's residents
The Moldovan government has extended until 31 December 2009 the deadline for issuing Moldovan IDs and passports to citizens of the breakaway Dniester region (a.k.a. Transnistria).
Since September 2008, Moldova has been issuing these documents to Dniester region's residents free of charge. So far, about 227,000 people from the Dniester region have received Moldovan documents.
According to the Moldovan Information Development Ministry, a total of 527,000 people are currently residing in the Dniester region, including 428,000 people who are 16 or older.
The Dniester authorities say that the region's population is 533,000 people.
