Alexandr Plohotniuc, a 28-year-old man from Republic of Moldova, was condemned by a Chisinau Law Court to seven years’ imprisonment.

He was accused by prosecutors of human trafficking. According to prosecutors, Alexandr Plohotniuc went to Ungheni, where he, together with his Ukrainian accomplices, recruited a 38-year-old woman from Ukraine for sexual exploitation. They cheated her by promising her a well-paid job of shop-assistant in Turkey. They organized shelter and transportation for the victim from Odessa region in Chisinau. After that, she had to be transported by airplane to the destination country.

When the woman was at the Chisinau International Airport, she realized she had to provide paid sexual services in the destination country. Thus, she refused going to Turkey. Taking advantage of the fact the woman was on the territory of a foreign state and she did not have any financial sources to return the debt, Alexandr Plohotniuc forced the woman to continue her trip to Turkey where he had to practice prostitution. The woman was stopped by the frontier guards on the Chisinau Airport.

The sentence may be re-examined by a higher level law court.
