Mannkind Corp. is betting that its inhalable insulin will be a hit with diabetes patients despite Pfizer's decision to stop selling a similar product.

Mannkind Chief Executive Alfred E. Mann said his inhalable insulin is medically superior to the product Pfizer pulled of the market last month because of poor sales, The Los Angeles Times reported Friday. The newspaper said Mann is putting nearly $1 billion of his own money on the effort.

"I believe this is one of the most valuable products in history in the drug industry, and I'm willing to back it up with my estate," Mann said.

MannKind, which is based in Valencia, Calif., is in the final stage of clinical trials for Technosphere Insulin. Mann said the company would be ready by the end of next year to apply for federal approval to sell the drug for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
