Low Sunday gathers the Moldovans in cemeteries

A grave covered by flowers

Another important holiday is marked in Moldova today and tomorrow. It is called Low Sunday (Pastele Blajinilor, in Romanian), a holiday when all those passed away are remembered. Their beloved ones gather at the cemetery to recall the moments spent with the one who passed away. The relatives make gifts with goods, food and other things which are necessary to the people. Some may also be invited to a dinner in the memory of the dead, which is usually served with red or white wine.

The Low Sunday is the holiday which brings the people together. Moldovans working abroad, come back home to visit the grave of their relatives and friends. At the cemetery they purify the graves with incense. Most of the goods which are to be given away are laid on the grave and wait to be hallowed by the priest. Afterwards they are offered to the walkers, relatives or friends.

Today and tomorrow the Moldovans have the days off.
