Los Alamos investigates safety concerns

Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico has suspended some nuclear work because of safety concerns.

Spokesman Kevin Roark told The New Mexican the move was precautionary and there was no danger of an accident.

The newspaper said there was concern there wasn’t adequate radiation shielding inside storage areas to prevent a nuclear chain reaction from occurring accidentally in fissile material, such as enriched plutonium.

Some operations were halted on Sept. 21. While some of the work has resumed, Roark said he did not know when operations would be back to normal.
