Language institute said lazy with English
Malaysia's official language oversight body has come under criticism for allowing too many English words into the Bahasa Malaysia language.
Member of Parliament Hashim Wan Teh challenged the Education Ministry on the issue involving the Institute of Language and Literature, which is called the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, the state-run Bernama news agency reported.
He said the language regulator, similar to France's Academie Francaise, was not doing enough research to find the root words in Bahasa Malaysia or Malay stock languages in the region.
Education ministry spokeswoman Komala Devi denied the claim, saying language was an ever-evolving concept, the report said.
"We found that words taken from English are those related to information communication technology," she said.
She said the ministry was also actively discouraging the use of adulterated language in television and radio programs. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
