Typhoon Krosa, after delivering a deadly punch to Taiwan, had weakened into a tropical storm Monday after making landfall in east China.

About 1.4 million people in the provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian had been evacuated before Krosa’s landfall Sunday afternoon.

Xinhua news agency reported high winds and torrential rains from the storm cut off power supply, damaged homes, and disrupted traffic and air services, but no casualties had been reported so far.

Sunday night, Krosa was headed toward the East China sea, moving at about 12 miles per hour.

Those evacuated included more than 500,000 tourists visiting the region’s coastal areas for their weeklong National Day holiday.

Rescuers were battling high winds to tow Alladdin Dream, a disabled Hong Kong-registered cargo ship with a 27-member international crew, to harbor, Xinhua said. The vessel suffered mechanical failure from the storm’s onslaught off the coast of Zhejiang Province’s Wenzhou City.

China Daily said the ship reportedly had anchored and was not in immediate danger of sinking.

Before heading toward China, Krosa slammed into northern Taiwan, killing five people and causing blackouts to more than 2 million households and businesses.  // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
