Krosa inflicts $1B in damage on China
Typhoon Krosa caused damage of more than $1 billion to China’s eastern provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian before returning to the East China Sea, a report said.
Xinhua news agency reported Krosa, which forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million people and affected 5 million more, hit the provinces Sunday. By Monday evening, it had been downgraded to a tropical storm as it moved back over the sea.
Krosa entered China from Taiwan where at least five deaths were blamed on the storm’s fury. No casualties were reported in China.
Before leaving the Chinese coast, the storm unleashed gale-force winds and torrential rains on Shanghai, the country’s most populous city, disrupting the Special Olympics there.
The loss to the provinces included at least 3,500 homes destroyed, extensive flooding of cropland and fish farms, disruption of transport and air services and damage to water facilities, the report said. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
