The international music festival "Martisor" was inaugurated in Chisinau on 1 March evening. The 43rd issue of the festival is dedicated to the 650th anniversary of the Moldovan State.

The opening concert was attended by Moldova's top leadership: President Vladimir Voronin, Speaker Marian Lupu and Prime Minister Zinaida Grecianii.

In her congratulatory message, Grecianii welcomed the participation of a high number of music bands from 17 countries, including, the USA, France, Germany, Russia, Romania, Ukraine, etc.

Grecianii praised the fact that the festival is to be held not only in Chisinau, but also in all Moldova's districts. The best Moldovan and foreign artists and music bands are to perform in over 70 Moldovan culture houses, most of them recently renovated, Grecianii said.

In 2009, the Martisor festival will be enjoyed by Moldovans working abroad as well due to the support offered by Moldovan diasporas in Italy, Greece, Portugal, Russia and Ukraine.

The concerts are to be traditionally conducted on 1-10 March. As many as five million lei (about 376,000 euros) are to be allotted for the organisation of over 350 concerts to be performed within the 2009 issue of the Martisor festival.
