Houston Socialite Joanne Herring Seeks Help For Afghanistan
A few years ago, people learned about a little-known chapter in the 1979 invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union through a book and, later, a movie called "Charlie Wilson's War." Charlie Wilson was a maverick Texas congressman, who found ways of funding Afghan insurgents with prodding from his Houston socialite girlfriend, Joanne Herring. Wilson was played by Tom Hanks in the movie and Herring was played by Julia Roberts. Herring is now 80 years old, but she remains actively involved in projects to help Afghanistan, where US forces and their Afghan partners are now fighting the Taliban. As VOA's Greg Flakus reports from Houston, Herring is now using her widespread influence to promote the economic and social development of the war-ravaged country.
