Grigore Vieru awarded Star of Romania Order posthumously
Romanian President Traian Basescu on January 19 issued a decree, conferring the Order of the Star of Romania with the rank of High Cross on poet Grigore Vieru posthumously.
According to the Romanian Presidential Office, Basescu bestowed the order on Grigore Vieru as a gesture of acknowledgment and appraisal for the love, talent and power of word with which he promoted peace and understanding between the people, remaining as a symbol of the connection between the speakers of the same language in the hearts of all the Romanians.
In 2000, Grigore Vieru was awarded the governmental medal of Romania "Eminescu- 150 years of the Birth”.
Considered the greatest contemporary poet in Moldova, Grigore Vieru would have turned 74 on February 14. The bard was born in Pererata village in 1935. He made his debut in 1957, when he was a student in Chisinau, with a poetry book for children. In 1968, he issued the volume of lyric verses "Numele tau" (“Your Name”), which began to be studied in universities in the year it was released.
