GPS info leads to gang arrest
Los Angeles police say a tracking bracelet helped lead investigators to an arrest in a drive-by shooting case.
Global Positioning Satellite bracelets were placed on 20 gang members last month as a condition of being released on parole, the Los Angeles Times said Wednesday. The bracelets, which keep a log of where the gang members are located, include time-stamped mapping.
John Garcia, 20, was arrested Monday night after Nelly Vergara was fatally shot in a Los Angeles neighborhood known for gang activity, the newspaper said.
The police department said it would like to extend the gang GPS program to parolees who live in areas with large numbers of shootings or are in particularly violent gangs.
The newspaper said the gang members being monitored have violent criminal histories, are
actively affiliated with a gang and are in one of the top-10 targeted Los Angeles gangs. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
