Within the scope of the international development cooperation of the Czech Republic and Republic of Moldova, the Association IARGARA (consisting of the companies MERCED a.s. and Dekonta a.s.) has realized a project in the area of elimination of an old environmental burden in the town of Iargara, district Leova, in the past three years.

As Infotag reports, a ceremonial completion of the project and handover of a groundwater treatment facility to the town of Iargara took place on 7th October 2009 in the presence of Mr. Petr Kypr, the Czech Republic Ambassador in Republic Moldova, representatives of the Ministry of the Environment of the Republic Moldova, region and the mayor of Iargara.

The decontamination station for removal of oil substances from groundwater represents a solution for the long-standing unsatisfactory situation in the drinking water, caused by ecological disasters on the premises of the oil substance storage and agricultural machinery repair factory in the town.

The project has been carried out using the funds of the Czech Republic budget earmarked for the development cooperation with Moldova. The total costs of the project amounted of USD 750,000.

The groundwater decontamination system built in the town of Iargara is the only completed project of this kind in the territory of Moldova. Moldova obtains a unique system, which within the test operation allowed drawing out more than 2500 m3 of contaminated groundwater and separating more than 4000 litres of oil substances from this water. Local residents can use the cleaned water to irrigate their gardens. The system operation prevents further spreading of the oil pollution, thus protecting local wells, the only source of drinking water in the town, from contamination.

A relatively simple in operation, yet effective technology was used to carry out the project. It should allow using it in other areas with similar pollution as well. The IARGARA project thus might become a sample, typical project in Moldova. It can be conveniently used as a "laboratory" to teach university students in the field of environmental protection or to train the environmental inspection officers.

During their work in the Moldavian environment, both the companies carrying out the project and their Moldavian partners have gained lot of valuable experience which can be used for future collaboration.
