Earthquakes may occur in Moldova as well

Chișinău / Moldova.ORG/ -- Two days ago in Romania were reported two earthquakes – one in Banat and another in Vrancea. The quakes were brief and at a low intensity – 2,9 and 3,5 on Richter scale. It is not yet known if a reply may happen, but if the magnitude is higher, then the earthquake will hit Moldova too.

The high-magnitude earthquakes (7 – 7,7 degrees), that have occurred in Moldova in 1908, 1940 and 1977 and have caused devastating losses, have proved that this country can be in real trouble due to its geophysical position – very close to the seismic zone Vrancea.

Vasile Alcaz, director of the Institute of Geology and Seismology reported last week that Moldova is not prepared for a high-magnitude earthquake. There are a lot of buildings that have been built before 1980, that are fragile and can be easily destroyed by an average earthquake.

It is questionable whether an earthquake may happen in Romania, but it is sure that the ones that occur in Carpati will be felt by Moldova as well.
