Doctors forecast malaria incidence growth in 2009

Medical experts are forecast an increase of malaria incidence in Moldova this year.

Chief of the parasitology department of the National Center for Preventive Medicine Vera Lungu told Infotag that 44 imported malaria cases were registered in 2008, one of these cases was lethal. However, 36 malaria cases have been already revealed from the beginning of 2009, in 33 cases Moldovans were infected, in other three cases – Nigerian citizens, who had come to Moldova.

”Malaria is brought to our country by our compatriots, who work on a contractual basis in tropical countries, mainly in Sudan, where each third African suffer from malaria. Despite the fact that each visitor to Sudan is thoroughly examined, it is very difficult to avoid the bites of malarial mosquitoes. A team of workers in Sudan includes doctors, who offer chemical prophylaxis by means of anti-malaria remedies”, Lungu said.

According to the Ministry of Health, in order to prevent cases of infecting Moldovan citizens with malaria, radio and TV broadcastings, dedicated to the International Day of Combating Malaria, with the participation of doctors, will be conducted on this day, which is marked on April 25.
