Moldova’s Central Election Commission has registered the initiative group set up by the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (LDPM) for raising citizens’ signatures in favor of amending the Constitution.

The LDPM stands for direct all-nation electing of the head of state and for electing a half of parliament from single-mandate constituencies and the other half – according to party lists. So, last February 23 the party decided to form such initiative group.

Out of the 1,446 group members, the Central Election Commission approved only 1,146, as the rest 3 hundred signatures in the submitted list were recognized as void. CEC Secretary Iurie Ciocan explained that, for instance, some citizens’ document data were indicated erroneously, and in some instances the document forms were filled incompletely, and so forth.

LDPM leader MP Vladimir Filat admits that, really, the initiative group list may contain some irregularities because it was drawn up in the course of an open-air rally in front of the National Opera and Ballet Theater.

According to the CEC Resolution, the initiative group is free to begin work already on March 24. Within subsequent 3 months its members must raise minimum 200 thousand valid signatures in favor of the Constitution amending. The signatures shall then delivered to the CEC, which will check them, and will submit a proposal to parliament on initiating a referendum or on a direct introducing of changes into the Main Law.  // Infotag
