Commission set up to monitor adoptions

A special commission for adoptions was created under the Government to examine the accuracy of the adoption cases and their compliance with the international adoption procedure.

The decision to set up the commission was approved by the Government on Wednesday for the purpose of preventing and combating corruption in the area of adoptions and trafficking in children.

The commission will be headed by Deputy Prime Minister Victor Stepaniuc.

Under the regulations concerning the commission’s activity, the commission will submit proposals regarding methodological assistance in the area of adoptions, monitor how the relevant authorities implement the legislation, express its position on the projects aimed at protecting the children that remained without parental care, launched by nongovernmental and foreign organizations, etc.

According to the Ministry of Social Protection, Family and Child, 64 Moldovan children had been adopted by foreigners in 2008. The Moldovans adopt about 300 children a year.
