Clothing mandatory for 'naked' bike riders
Eyes won't have to be completely averted in St. Louis Saturday during the World Naked Bike Ride because police say it can't be quite so au natural.
Local organizers and police hammered out an agreement in which participants will be advised not to bare all if they want to avoid a tete-a-tete with police, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Friday.
We're encouraging strategic coverage,
said Mariah Pittman, a Washington University student and one of the local organizers. The official word is that there is to be no complete nudity.
The ride, which begins about Saturday night in Tower Grove Park, is being run to promote recycling and to protest America's dependence on oil.
Citing the city's ordinance on indecent and lewd conduct, police officials said they will arrest anyone riding naked, the newspaper reported. That means no exposure of genitals, buttocks or breasts.
If they expose the parts of the body that the ordinance says can't be exposed, we'll enforce the law,
said Maj. Harry Hegger of the South Patrol Division, which includes Tower Grove Park. We ask that they practice common decency.
