Chisinau water chief promises international - quality water for capital city starting from 2012

Constantin Becciev, Director of the Apa-Canal municipal water/sewage company, maintains that already in 2012 Chisinau citizens will be drinking what he called "naturally cleaned water", when chlorine, used for water treatment worldwide for many decades, will be replaced with sodium hypochlorite.

In his words, such possibility appeared after 10 companies from the United States, which took part in an international conference on potable water quality improvement in Chisinau, had announced their readiness to invest nearly US$2 million in a project on replacing the main disinfecting agent in the city, with the total project cost being some US$4 million.

"The other half of the money will be invested by Apa-Canal, the Chisinau Primaria [city government] and donors. It is believed that the American side will invest in automation of technological process of water disinfection with the above-mentioned new agent, whereas we will provide funding for labor force and disinfecting equipment", said Constantin Becciev.

Presently, Apa-Canal uses annually nearly 300 tons of chlorine for water treatment, which he believes is an abnormally outdated methodology.
