Chisinau administration to launch project to sterilize stray dogs
The Chisinau City Hall in concert with an Austrian animal protection foundation will implement a new project to neuter, disinfect and vaccinate the Chisinau stray dogs against rabies.
According to the Chisinau authorities, the project is aimed at identifying, supervising and registering the stray dogs. The municipal authorities have allocated plots of land and a room needed for the project, while the Austrian foundation will provide equipment and a mobile clinic.
About 40 stray dogs will be sterilized every day. Afterward they will be marked so that they could be identified. Initially, the project will last for two months and will be continued later.
A similar project was launched in the summer of 2008, but was suspended through lack of financial resources. There are about 30,000 stray dogs in Chisinau at present. The sterilization of a dog costs about 300 lei.
