Children and pregnant women to receive free food packages

Pregnant women, nursing mothers and children younger than 2 will be provided with free food packages as part of the Health and Social Assistance Services Project from an additional grant offered by the World Bank in response to the world food crisis.

According to officials of the Ministry of Health, about 6,000 pregnant and nursing women and over 8,000 children will receive such packages.

The grant is designed for pregnant women and nursing mothers with children under 6 months and for children aged between 6 and 24 months. A package includes food products that contain approximately 2,500 kkl a day per person. A sum of US$2million will be used for the purpose.

The women and children that will benefit from aid were identified by a team of family doctors, social assistants and representatives of local mayor’s orifices. The beneficiaries were selected according to medical and social criteria.

The first packages will be distributed at end-February. The packages will be shared out once in two months by the district commissions for humanitarian aid during six months.

The project is implemented by the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social Protection, Family and Child, the Ministry pf Local Public Administration, the World Bank and UNICEF Moldova.
