Islamabad (dpa) - One person died Tuesday from a car bomb outside the Peshawar city airport in Pakistan's restive North-West Frontier Province (NWFP), while two other blasts occurred in other regions.

Three people were initially injured when explosives planted in a car parked by the airport detonated, one of whom later succumbed to his injuries, city police chief Malik Saad told the private Geo TV channel.

The two other victims were in a stable condition, he added.

Saad called it an act of terrorism and linked the explosion to a string of bombings in recent months in provincial capital Peshawar.

Kausar Ali, manager of the airport security force, told Geo that the bomber had to leave the car in the unmanned area due to strict security inside the airport's main parking lot.

Last month, a suicide bomber attacked a police patrol van in Peshawar, killing himself and wounding two policemen.

Military action in the province in support of the anti-Taliban operations by NATO-led forces in neighbouring Afghanistan have caused resentment in Islamic circles and among tribesmen sympathetic to the militants.

Another explosion damaged a school for girls in the town of Dara Adam Khel situated about 35 kilometres from Peshawar, but no casualties were reported.

Educational institutions catering to the female population are being threatened by radical elements in the tribal town, which is known for its arms' industry.

A separate explosion rocked a market in the Dera Ismail Khan district of the NWFP. No casualties were reported but several businesses were damaged.

Troops were deployed in the town over the weekend after four people were shot dead at a cemetery shortly after a funeral for a murdered university teacher. // © 2006 DPA
