Beijing population to hit 20M by 2020
Beijing’s population, more than 15 million now, is forecast to hit 20 million by 2020 as more people are drawn to the Chinese capital by its robust economy.
A report from Peking’s University’s Institute of Population Research said although the natural birth rate of the city has seen zero growth in the past five years, the city’s numbers have shot up because of incoming residents including those staying permanently, Xinhua news agency reported.
To stay permanently in the city, residents must obtain permanent residence certificates.
The report also forecast the city's aged population will rise 12 percent in the next 20 years, creating more democratic and social challenges for the city government, Xinhua said.
The report said the capital's population growth in the past five years has been phenomenal, increasing by more than 10 million during that time and making Beijing one of the world’s most populous cities.
The city will host the Summer Olympics next year. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
