After getting too much publicity, the Mayor of the Romanian town Pecica decided to change the signs "Attention-Drunks".

An article published in the UK's Telegraph, followed by TV news reports in US (Fox News and others), state that street signs in a Romanian town warn drivers to be careful of drunken pedestrians. Officials in Pecica, a village town about 13 miles from the Hungarian border in the country’s west, ordered the bright red triangular signs. They were put up along Pecica roads, featuring a stylized silhouette of a crawling reveler holding a bottle within a red border. The words "drunk citizens" are below the image. The 10 road signs were installed in popular nightspot areas close to the city's bars and restaurants.

Petru Antal, the Pecica Mayor, is cited by the Telegraph saying that the idea came after he visited an unnamed town in Germany, which had installed similar signs. He said officials took action after a “despairing” number of accidents in his town, which has a population of about 13,000, caused by drunken revelers, with some even resulting in fatalities, the Telegraph reported. "We are a border town and have lots of cars thundering through here all the time," Antal told local media.

But after getting excessive media coverage of the location of road signs warning with "drunk citizens" local government decided to change them.

After consultations with representatives of the Traffic Police, the local authorities decided to replace these signs with new signs, although the mayor's good will was appreciated, says a press release published on town's website.

"We had consultations with representatives of the Arad County Traffic Police and we decided together that this sign to be changed to those that have the meaning "other dangers"," said the mayor.

Petru Antal said he wanted to assist drivers to avoid road accidents caused by intoxicated persons, because only those who were involved in such accidents understand the situation.

Residents said they found the signs amusing.

The new signs are expected to arrive in the next few days.

Through its action, the City Hall made the Romanian town of Pecica known around the globe. Good advertisement, after all.
