Art works pulled at Dallas library
Dallas officials have taken down several works from a college art student’s exhibit at a city library, labeling them inappropriate for children.
Alex Trevino, a 23-year-old fine arts major at Brookhaven College, said he understood the decision not to display images disturbing for children. However, he questioned why some less controversial works also were removed from the exhibit at Manske Library, The Dallas Morning News reported Monday.
City Manager Gary Greer said he removed works depicting violence, gore and undetailed frontal nudity.
"Some of the pieces they took down, I don't understand," he said. "You can't see any genitalia or anything."
Greer said his decision was a hard one to make.
"It's the first night in this job I haven't slept. It was really weighing on me pretty heavily. I know the importance of a decision like this," he said. "I understand the freedom of expression. An artist is supposed to stir the emotions and thoughts of people."
He said his concern for young library patrons won out, though.
"I felt compelled to make sure we didn't have anything that was inappropriate for children," he said. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
