Aplington-Parkersburg High School officials said athletic director Ed Thomas has been shot in the school's weight room on Wednesday morning. Sue Muller, the district's board secretary, said Thomas, 58, was airlifted to the hospital. A Waterloo hospital spokeswoman confirmed that Thomas has died.
A memorial vigil is planned at the school's football field at 7 p.m. on Wednesday to remember Thomas.
Butler County Sheriff Jason Johnson said that a suspect has been taken into custody and is at the Butler County Jail. According to KCCI-TV, the man taken into custody is Mark Becker, 24, of Parkersburg, a former football player on Thomas' team.
Butler County officials said Becker was taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. He has been charged with first-degree murder. Becker was involved in a high-speed police chase on June 20 that reached speeds of 80 mph, officials said Wednesday.
Officials said 30 students witnessed the shooting at 7:47 a.m.
