An Unexpected Script of Apocalypse
By Diana Ungureanu/ Chisinau / Moldova.ORG/ -- Russian researchers are very worried about the future of the planet and not because of any comet that is heading towards the Earth, or because of the crisis of food and water. Scientists warn about a highly increased level of methane released into the Arctic Ocean after deglaciation, a phenomenon caused by global warming.
Oceanic platform of the Eastern Arctic Siberia is monitored for 20 years by a group of Russian researchers, which in recent years recorded abundant emanations of methane gas from deglaciation.
Methane gas is a hazardous to the human body; it is 20 times more toxic than carbon dioxide.
In an exclusive interview for newspaper The Independent, Igor Semiletov, a researcher delegate in the area by the prestigious Academy of Sciences of Russia, said that he never saw such a continuous mass of methane released from Siberian permafrost and under the Arctic calotte.
But why is methane gas emanated with the melting of sea ice in Siberia? Researchers estimate that under the Arctic ice calotte are blocked hundreds of millions of tons of methane.
The most discouraging forecast of scientists is that during the following summer, in 2012, the calotte will melt and will release methane stored under it. Releasing millions of tons of methane will cause a severe and rapid changing of the climate on the planet.
Dr. Semiletov published in 2010 a report indicating that emissions of methane in the region reached to 8 million tons annually, but data obtained in the latest expedition carried out of the research team Academician Lavrentiev, suggest much higher results.
Another script for the year 2012, is it really so bad this year will be that will take over duties in a few weeks?
